FTX Banzai stock VS brushless converted

Something we get asked at Wheelspin Models is what is the difference in performance between brushed and brushless setups. With my FTX Banzai I have decided to see what difference there will be on this 1/10 on road racer going from brushed to brushless, and see what sort of speeds can be achieved.

The brushed setup out the box feels good for a basic brushed setup and gearing. We took this out on the car park and by using the Voltz nimh battery pack that comes in the box with the car, we got a top speed of 18mph.

A few weeks later after changing the motor and esc over to the hobbywing Max10 3300kv combo, we took the car back out to see what we could now get out of the car. We didn’t change any gearing with the spur or pinion gear, but I used a 3S Lipo battery to see what the extra voltage from a lipo battery will help get with the speed.

To say I was a little disappointed is an understatement! It reached 26mph. The car has better torque and poke, but the top speed is a bit disappointing.

While top speed isn’t the be all and end all of things when it comes to how your RC car runs, I have to admit I am pretty adamant to get the top speed much better on my Banzai with the brushless set up. So I am going to go and change the spur and pinion gears to see what we can achieve in the future.
