Nitromethane based "nitro" engines are widely used in the RC hobby and run on nitro fuel. The nitro engine is an air cooled, two stroke engine. The term "two-stroke" means that every time the piston moves up and down inside the cylinder, it completes a revolution of the crankshaft in one direction. In a four-stroke engine cycle, the piston must move up then down twice to complete one revolution of the crankshaft.
The size of nitro engines is defined by displacement - the volume of air moved each time the piston moves up and down. This is often referred to as "Engine Size" or "Engine Class". Engine sizes range from .12 cubic inch (2.1cc) up to around 0.46 cubic inch (7.5cc). Popular sizes are 3.5cc - 4.6cc for 1:8 buggies and truggies and 2.5-3.0cc for 1:10 stadium trucks and buggies.
