TT-02 Type S steering upgrade

I decided to get the best possible upgrade to the steering on my Type S. There are several options on the market for the TT-02 but I can honestly say this is the best one (the price is a bit painful so you would expect top quality).

It is important not to get these steering upgrade sets confused. One is for the stock TT-02, and one is for the Type S only.

Stock TT-02 kit: HC-54752.

TT-02 Type S kit: HC-54965.

Here is my kit un-bagged and partially assembled.

Some might argue that the Type-S should come with something already in this department, but the truth is that the Type-S has the turnbuckles for steering and the upper arms which are far more accurate than the stock chassis.

Combine this with the included oil filled shocks and ball bearings and it is an absolute bargain at only around £20 more than a stock TT-02. It is only the first level up from the stock car though. The Type SR is much more expensive.

Here is my Type-S with the added steering upgrade plus other nice bits.

I wanted to take as much play out of the car as possible so I am very happy with this kit. The new arms that run on ball bearings move perfectly freely even though the screws are firmly tight, and there is literally no play at all in the components.

I found the Fastrax steering kit does not match this quality but is still a very good upgrade over the stock TT-02 steering arm. For double the price, you would expect the Tamiya item to be much better and it certainly is.

One other thing you will notice with your Type-S is that the wheels can be pulled and pushed and will have a small amount of play in them. I found using a Traxxas PTFE coated washer pack (part ref: TRX1985) sorted this out nicely on the rear.

Carefully place 1x 0.5mm washer from this pack on the inside of the rear hub on each side over the driveshaft and sitting next to the inside hub bearing and it takes the play away completely. I found that 0.5mm was too thick for the front hubs though so I will be looking for 0.3 or 0.2mm to see if that works.

Overall though the chassis is nice and solid now. Very little play in any of the components. I’m confident that it will make a good speed car as soon as I find some better tyres that give the required stability and grip levels.
