Shock oil change on a Tamiya Wild One

So I have been having so much fun with my Tamiya Wild One however after much off road abuse the shocks are now a bit worse for wear, so its time to clean them up and change the oil. It;s a very easy job that requires basic tools and can be down in around 20 minutes.

Items required

I have opted for Traxxas 30wt shock oil however other brands are available.

so to get started remove the shock that you are working on and give it a quick clean with the brush. I like to place all of the items removed neatly on the bench in the order they have been removed to make it easier when I am putting it all back together.

After it has been removed unscrew the top cap of the shock and pour out the old oil, I normally pour it into to a paper towel and the dispose of this in the bin. Pull the shock shaft to its lowest position and top up with oil leaving roughly a 1mm gap.

It is worth letting the shocks rest like this for a few minutes to help any trapped air get to the surface. Next, push the shock shaft in half way and screw the top cap on ensuring the shock bladder is still in place and does not get damaged on the thread.

Once you have completed this step the shocks should be ready to give a final clean and refit to the model, Its also worth using the GT85 to lubricate any moving parts on the chassis including wheel bearings at this stage before re-assembly.

Your shocks should now be nice and smooth and should improve the damping and rebound of the shock.
