UDI RC 1:16 brushless speed runs

The UDIRC range of 1/16 RC cars are incredible little cars for the money. I have just gone with the UDIRC Rally L, for some sideways rally car fun. The one thing we get asked is what speed does the brushless version do? We thought we would give it a test to find out!

3 different speed settings?

There are 3 different power settings on your transmitter that are included with the UDIRC Rally L. On the side of the transmitter is CH4, and it allows you 3 settings to select, all of which give you varying performance levels.

Having the button furthest away from the trigger will have it on the slowest setting. So we thought we would get the speed runs for each setting. So we got the battery on charge, plugged it in the car and took it for a spin in the car park.

We had a chat inside the shop of what we was expecting the speeds to be on the car. I thought that we would achieve the following given the speeds of 30mph plus on the box:

1st setting - 15mph

2nd setting - 22mph

3rd setting - 30mph

However it was a little surprising:

Setting 1

It was slow lol It looked slow, it felt slow, so no real surprise there. 11mph

Setting 2

Ok 16mph, so a little bit better but it did actually feel more responsive on the trigger and more lively, but surely the quote of 30mph plus as advertised isn’t going be achievable on the final third setting?

Right now this was a surprise. It felt like a completely different animal and actually felt like you were using a brushless motor. It felt really lively and fun to drive, and it was so easy to get some nice slides with it. It was much quicker than the previous 2 settings on the transmitter, but was it enough to be there or thereabouts to the quote 30mph plus on the box?

Unfortunately the numbers don’t match the speeds on the packaging, which is a little disappointing. However, I won’t lie, 24mph on this little 1/16th car is a bloody great bit of speed and it felt much quicker when using it.

We was saying in the shop after we done this that a lot of people get caught up in the RC world by the numbers of a top speed of a car. What is more important should be what the poke and response is, as lets be honest a number of cars aren’t going to reach their top speeds anyway (especially when used off road).

I won’t lie, having it on the first two settings are quite underwhelming, but the third setting really does make it a real piece of kit in my opinion. Don’t be put off by the top speed, you won’t regret it!
